Google Maps location sharing, explained

How Google Maps location sharing works on Android and iPhone, how long shares last, and where a friend-first app still wins.

How to turn it on

Open Google Maps, tap your profile picture, then Location sharing. Choose a person from your contacts or share via a link. You pick a duration: a few hours, until you turn it off, or another window Maps offers in your region. The other person needs a Google account to follow your live updates in Maps.

On Android this feels native because Maps is already the default. On iPhone it works too, which is useful when an Android friend needs to see you and you do not want them stuck outside Find My.

What it is good at

Google Maps location sharing is strong for travel days, airport pickups, and any plan where both people already live in Maps. You can see ETA style movement on a familiar interface, and you can stop sharing from the same Location sharing screen when the job is done.

It also helps mixed households. Parents on Android and kids on iPhone can share through Google without forcing everyone onto one phone brand, as long as everyone is comfortable signing into Google.

Where it gets awkward

Maps is a general navigation product first. Location sharing sits inside it, so friend groups, festival meets, and bedtime check-ins never get first-class treatment. There is no real notion of an event hub, and there is no low-stress ping that says I am heading back without streaming the whole walk.

People also forget shares that were set to until you turn this off. Months later someone still has your blue dot. That quiet oversharing is how location tools earn a creepy reputation even when nobody meant harm.

A cleaner pattern for friends

Keep Google Maps for road trips and one-off shares with people who already use it. For standing friend circles, Kinfolk keeps the map, the invites, and the off switch in one place. Temporary circles expire. Ghost mode is obvious. Safe-home timers cover the night-out case Maps never really solved.

If you searched for how to share location on Android or how to share live location, Maps will get you started in a minute. If you want the share to feel like a social product instead of a navigation leftover, that is the gap Kinfolk fills.
